The Apa Sherpa Foundation has formally announced their continued teacher support / school lunch fundraiser dinner, to be held Friday, March 10, 2017. All proceeds will directly fund the foundation’s joint effort with Thule to start a school lunch program in the remote Ghat School in Nepal, along with continued support of teacher’s wages.
Schedule of Events:
- 5:00-6:00 pm: Mix and Mingle – bar available/silent auction opens
- 6:00-6:15 pm: Welcome by the ASF Board.
- 6:30-7:30 pm: Light dinner/Silent auction updates
- 7:30-8:30 pm:
- 8:30-9:00 pm: Closing of silent auction/pictures with Apa
The Apa Sherpa Foundation:
Founded by legendary mountaineer Apa Sherpa, the Apa Sherpa Foundation’s mission is to empower individuals and communities in the Himalayas with educational and economic opportunities. Earning his nickname, ‘Tiger of the Himalaya’, climbing Mt. Everest an unprecedented 21 times. He rose from humble beginnings to become a Guinness Book of Records mountaineer—and then he focused his efforts on a foundation that would develop educational opportunities in his homeland and remote villages. “Without an education, we have no choice,”he observes, noting the great obstacles he had to overcome to obtain a modest education amidst economic hardship.
Education Fundraiser Dinner:
Hosted and donated by the WESTGATE Spa and Resort in Park City, Utah, the event begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include a welcoming reception (hosted by Apa Sherpa), dinner, and keynote speeches from prominent friends of the Apa Sherpa Foundation; Will Cross, Christine Taylor-Butler and Phil Ruggieri from Everest Omni Productions.

Christine Taylor Butler
Christine Taylor-Butler is the award winning author of more than 80 books for children and young adults including Sacred Mountain: Everest. A graduate of MIT, she holds degrees in both Civil Engineering and Art & Design. Christine has spoken at a number of national conventions including American Library Association, National Council of Teachers of English, International Literacy Association, Assembly on Adolescent Literature as well as literature festivals across the country. Phil Ruggieri is alumnus of IBM and venture capital, with experience in advanced technology solutions, corporate executive management and international business. He has extensive CEO level experience and he has invested in and run entrepreneurial companies, as well as very large global profit centers at IBM. Mr. Ruggieri is CEO of IDEAS Integration and a member of the Board of the Apa Sherpa Foundation. Mr. Ruggieri has extensive volunteer experience in great causes, and has served for over 20 years as Chairman and Board Director at Special Olympics.

Christine Taylor Butler
Christine Taylor-Butler is the award winning author of more than 80 books for children and young adults including Sacred Mountain: Everest. A graduate of MIT, she holds degrees in both Civil Engineering and Art & Design. Christine has spoken at a number of national conventions including American Library Association, National Council of Teachers of English, International Literacy Association, Assembly on Adolescent Literature as well as literature festivals across the country. She was one of twenty authors and screenwriters invited to attend workshops the second annual Schrodinger conference (Quantum Mechanics for Science Fiction Writers) sponsored by the Joint Quantum Institute at University of Maryland. Her young adult series, The Lost Tribes, debuted in March 2015. The sequel, Safe Harbor debuts in January 2017. Kirkus Reviews said of the series: “…a breath of fresh air. Well written and well paced.” “…solid character development, strong writing, and action will appeal to sci-fi and adventure-story readers alike.”
Christine is a member of Society of Midland Authors, The Authors Guild, PEN America, Science Fiction Writers of America and the Kansas City Science Fiction Society. She is past president and treasurer of Missouri Writers Guild. She lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Will effectively manages his diabetes in the most extreme conditions, while facing many challenges such as irregular meals, extreme temperatures, unusual sleeping patterns, physical exertion, high risks of frostbite and dehydration, and less than ideal conditions in which to monitor glucose levels and administer insulin. Will seeks to get the message out that if he can control his diabetes in the most unlikely conditions, no one should feel hindered by diabetes.
Will’s memberships include the American Alpine Club, Royal Geographical Society, Explorers Club, and the American Mountain Guides Association. He received a Gold Congressional Award for exemplary service to the United States, granted for his initiative, achievement and service. Will is a professional member of the National Speakers Association.
Will holds a Bachelor of Arts from Allegheny College, a Master of Science in Education from Duquesne University, and Secondary Principal’s Certification from the University of Pittsburgh, where he specialized in educational programs for troubled teens.
